Bad Brakes Pads? How to Tell

Within the braking system, one of the most important components are the brake pads, which help slow down your vehicle. It’s because of this component that the braking system doesn’t take any damage when stopping at higher speeds so it’s important that you understand the signs of a worn brake pad. That’s where we can help. Keep these warning signs in mind during your next drive!

Noisy Brakes

Although hearing occasional sounds from the brakes is normal, especially in colder weathers, it isn’t normal to consistently hear noises during use. When using the brakes, listen for any squeaking or squealing and grinding. Squeaking or squealing is the brake pads telling you that they are at their minimum level of thickness and that the metal spring installed in the brake pad is gently scraping the brake disc. We recommend a brake pad replacement service at your first convenience.

If you hear grinding, that is the braking system telling you that the pads have completely worn out and that the metal calipers are squeezing on the metal brake disc. This extra heat generated by the friction can cause severe damage to the system and we recommend having your vehicle serviced as soon as possible!

Poor Response

When using the brakes, your vehicle should respond to whatever amount of pressure you place on the pedal. If you notice that it takes your vehicle a little longer to stop, even if there’s firm pressure on the brake pedal, that could be a sign of worn out brake pads. This is extremely dangerous to drive with and the metal-on-metal contact can cause additional problems. Please visit us as soon as you notice this.
